My Literary analysis of “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin
In the story the author does show that the family is supportive of Sonny and his recovery, but also brings a dark tone when speaking of the heroin addiction his brother suffers from and the sadness it brings to the whole family. His mother and father have a palpable sadness that is always abalysis under the surface of every sentence that mentions them.
God promises here that they will no longer drink from the cup of trembling or feel His wrath and that the cup of trembling will instead be put into the hands of their enemies.
Sonny was determined to leave Harlem behind, unlike his brother who stayed to become a teacher and has a family. A limited time offer! Most of his life he wants nothing to do with him because he cannot understand him.
Baldwin creates a very flawed, yet likable young man as b,ues main character. The narrator essau the story is the brother that stayed behind, while his brother Sonny left to pursue a career as a musician.
When Sonny finally comes back from the war, the two brothers finally see each other bllues after Sonny returned home, leading to the climax of the story. He is truly a decent person who was held back by his circumstances and lack sonnys opportunity. essxy The conclusion of the story ends with the narrator finally going to see his brother play at a club that he previously invited him to. Luckily for Sonny and the narrator, they were able to put aside their differences and the narrator was there for Sonny when he performed, and watching him on stage allows the narrator to finally understand Sonny and realize what he is made of. It can be seen as a main secondary character in and of itself because of all of the conflict it embodies.

After the tragic death of his daughter Grace the brothers finally had some type of communication the men talked and Sonny tells his brother how much he needed to see him and Sonny ends up moving in with his brother and his brothers family after he gets out of jail.
Both brothers see the downfalls of the community and that drugs run ramped in their community but even though Sonny leaves Harlem, anlysis still finds himself with a drug problem and goes to prison because of it.

Surprisingly enough, this argument is what brings them together and allows the narrator to get to know Sonny and learn that he never really knew who his brother was. The narrator when he sees drugs being dealt in the playground near the projects and that the neighborhood is going downhill and struggling with his brother. Logically, if the story happened almost anywhere else, it would lose the underlying tension that makes the story a favorite in the American canon. Although racism, poverty and all of the other socio-economic barriers at not the main theme, they are certainly prevalent.
